About

SCERS—short for the Sacramento County Employees’ Retirement System—is far more than a pension provider. It’s a professionally governed, mission-driven organization that exists to secure the financial well-being of public employees in Sacramento County and participating districts. This section gives you an inside look at the System’s structure, the values that guide it, and how it maintains accountability to you.

SCERS is a multiple-employer public employee retirement system, established in 1941 and governed under the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 (“1937 Act”). As a separate and independent governmental entity, SCERS administers retirement, disability, and survivor benefit programs for Sacramento County and eleven special district employers—including local park, cemetery, and court agencies.

As of June 30, 2025, SCERS serves:

  • 13,952 active members
  • 14,606 retired members
  • 5,102 deferred members

SCERS is guided by the constitutional mandate (Article XVI, Section 17 of the California Constitution) and has full authority and fiduciary responsibility for managing the System in a way that protects members’ interests above all else.
