Answers to frequently asked questions about the 1099-R:

What is a 1099-R?

A 1099-R reports the distribution of retirement plans and other income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  The 1099-R form is used by recipients to report income in their annual federal and state tax filing.

Why did I receive a 1099-R?

Members receiving a 1099-R received a distribution of income from Sacramento County Employees’ Retirement System (SCERS) due to one or many of the following:

  1. Distribution Types:
    1. Recipient of Regular Pension Payments
    2. Cash-out of Contributions and Interest
    3. Death Benefit Payment
    4. Alameda Correction

Why did I receive two (2) 1099-R forms from SCERS?

Sacramento County Employees’ Retirement System (SCERS) processed 1099-R forms based on the distribution types.  If you received more than one distribution type you will receive more than one (1) 1099-R forms.

  1. Distribution Types:
    1. Recipient of Regular Pension Payments
    2. Cash-out of Contributions and Interest
    3. Death Benefit Payment
    4. Alameda Correction

Do I receive a 1099-R even though I rolled over my distribution to a tax-deferred account, such as a 457 or a 401k?

Yes.  Rollover distributions must be reported on a 1099-R even if the transaction is tax-free.  SCERS files these amounts to the IRS to report that the distribution was sent to another retirement account.
